Brook Rosser

I live and work in San Antonio, Texas as a painter and Professor of Communication Design at San Antonio College. I received my BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin and my MFA in Painting and Drawing from Texas Tech University. My paintings and drawings have been exhibited in both group and solo exhibitions as well as juried shows.

My paintings rely on playful symbolism, bright color, and texture. Fanciful trees, flowers, animals and other imagery are formed by paint, torn pieces of metallic paper, metallic foil and other found materials such as labels. My paintings attempt to tell a story that celebrates the cycle of life, including love, joy, passion, renewal and growth.

My work has been exhibited in the Texas area at galleries and venues such as AnArte Gallery in San Antonio, Submerge Gallery in Austin, University Autonoma de Mexico, St. Mary’s University, Texas Tech University, The University of Texas at Tyler, and Arizona State Universities Institute for Humanities and Research, Blue Star Art Complex and other institutions. I have also been represented in the past by Helios Gallery in Ojai, California.  My work has been acquired for both private and corporate collections such as Brake Check, Tito’s Vodka, the University Hospital Health System’s Robert B. Green Research Facility and Methodist University Hospital, Methodist Women and Children’s Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, and others.

I grew up in a family that loves it’s Texas roots but also travel and whimsy. As a native of San Antonio, I love the rich cultural and visual heritage of Texas. Texans are known for telling stories and sometimes a tall tale or two. I try to carry on this tradition in my paintings through symbolism.  I often fill my canvases with playful images of nostalgic memories. Portraits of objects from my home or my travels fill my canvases which attempt to weave a visual story rich in color, texture, and lore.
